Special Report: From the Senate to a Terminal Diagnosis; The Latest on Ben Sasse

Ben Sasse, the former Republican U.S. Senator from Nebraska and ex-president of the University of Florida, has returned to the headlines in late 2025 with tragic news. After a turbulent two years marked by a high-profile career shift, a sudden resignation, and spending controversies, Sasse is now facing his most difficult battle yet.

1. Terminal Cancer Diagnosis (December 2025)

On December 23, 2025, the 53-year-old Sasse announced via social media that he has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. In a candid and emotional statement, he acknowledged the severity of his condition, writing, “It is a death sentence.” Sasse revealed that the cancer has metastasized but affirmed his spirit, stating, “I’m not going down without a fight.” The announcement drew immediate support from across the political spectrum, with former colleagues and rivals alike expressing their sorrow and prayers.

2. Resignation from UF & Family Health Crisis (July 2024)

Before this personal health crisis, Sasse made headlines in July 2024 for abruptly resigning as the President of the University of Florida (UF) after serving only 17 months. He cited the deteriorating health of his wife, Melissa, who had suffered an aneurysm years prior and was recently diagnosed with epilepsy and significant memory issues. Sasse stated at the time, “Gator Nation needs a president who can keep charging hard, Melissa deserves a husband who can pull his weight, and my kids need a dad who can be home many more nights.”

3. The Spending Controversy (2024-2025)

Sasse’s short tenure at UF was followed by intense scrutiny regarding his administration’s spending habits. Reports that surfaced post-resignation revealed:

  • Tripled Spending: Expenses for the president’s office ballooned to $17.3 million in his first year—more than triple that of his predecessor.
  • Hiring Allies: Investigations highlighted lucrative contracts awarded to big-name consulting firms and high-salaried remote positions given to his former Senate staffers and GOP allies.
  • State Audit: In early 2025, state auditors flagged these expenditures, raising questions about the necessity and transparency of the funds used during his presidency.

Current Status

Despite the controversies, Sasse retained a role as President Emeritus and a professor at UF’s Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education. However, with his recent diagnosis, his focus has now shifted entirely to his health and his family during this critical time.
